Tadepalli, April 10: Former Chief Minister and YSRCP President YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed deep concern over the continued distress of aqua farmers in the state. He criticized Chandrababu Naidu for holding meetings and making statements that seem to serve more as publicity rather than yielding any practical solutions.
He pointed out that the recent meeting held by the Chief Minister following public pressure and protests by YSRCP leaders has not resulted in any improvement on the ground. Local leaders from various districts have reported that no relief or benefits have reached the aqua farmers.
YS Jagan questioned why the government has failed to act despite a significant reduction in import duties on aqua feed ingredients — from 15% to 5% — and a drastic fall in soybean prices. While feed companies had increased prices when costs were high, there has been no corresponding price reduction now, putting further strain on farmers.
He also demanded an explanation for the stagnant export prices of shrimp. Despite the U.S. deferring tariffs for 90 days and Europe being unaffected by tariff issues, shrimp prices remain low, and the government-fixed price of Rs. 220 is not reaching the farmers. He urged the government to ensure a fair price of at least Rs. 270 for 100-count prawns.
He further demanded the immediate revival of the Empowering Committee under the Andhra Pradesh Aquaculture Development Authority — a support system that actively worked to safeguard farmer interests during the YSRCP regime. He called on the TDP government to stop making empty announcements and instead deliver real relief to struggling aqua farmers.
