Kuppam, April 28: The Kuppam Municipal Chairperson by-election unfolded as a stark reminder of the prevailing undemocratic practices in the state under the TDP-led coalition government. Despite securing a majority with 19 out of 25 seats, the YSRCP faced intense coercion and unethical tactics from TDP leaders, leading to the controversial election results.
YSRCP MLC KRJ Bharat, speaking with the media, strongly condemned the entire process, terming it a "Black Day for democracy." He pointed out that the TDP, despite being outnumbered in the council, resorted to intimidation, threats, and even financial incentives to lure away YSRCP councilors. "TDP's desperate attempt to grab power at any cost is a blatant violation of democratic principles," Bharat said, stressing that this was a reflection of how the TDP operates in Kuppam, a constituency represented by Chandrababu Naidu.
The election witnessed TDP leaders making direct interventions, with threats and promises of up to Rs. 50 lakhs being offered to sway YSRCP councilors. This unethical pressure led to the defection of 10 YSRCP councilors, who defied party whip and voted against their own party’s candidate. Bharat remarked, “Despite this coercion, 9 YSRCP councilors stood their ground, casting their votes in favor of their party. Their courage stands testament to their commitment to the principles of YSRCP and democracy."
The MLC emphasized that action will be taken against the defected councilors, stating, “We will approach the High Court and ensure that those who violated the party whip face the consequences, and their positions will be nullified." Bharat further warned that TDP’s manipulative practices will not go unchallenged and that in the upcoming elections, YSRCP will firmly raise its flag in Kuppam. "The YSRCP will emerge victorious, with the people’s support, in the next elections. The TDP's tactics may win them temporary battles, but they will lose the war for the people's trust," he concluded.
Bharat also highlighted the resilience of YSRCP's councilors, who have shown immense courage in the face of pressure, reaffirming that the party’s fight for a transparent and people-centric government will continue relentlessly. The ongoing crisis, he asserted, would not deter the party's commitment to its core values of integrity, democracy, and progress.
